Ya Gotta Love Weird Al
November 16, 2008 on 4:46 pm | In TV, Movies/Film/Video, Music | No CommentsI watched UHF last night - it had been awhile - and was reminded that as stupid and corny as Weird Al’s humor is, it still cracks me up every time. There’s something about his particular style and charisma that elevates his flavor of comedy above other similarly stupid works like The Naked Gun. Then again, I seem to respond to super over-the-top corniness with a high cringe factor, so maybe it’s just his tilt toward risk-taking absurdity. After watching the movie, I revisited a Weird Al fave, White and Nerdy, and watched the entire nearly eleven minutes of the Trapped in the Closet parody titled Trapped in the Drive Thru. How did I not know that this existed?? I would have embedded the videos here but unfortch Weird Al TV won’t let me embed their vids. What’s up with that?

DEVO on Sex and Scooters
November 16, 2008 on 4:45 pm | In TV, Activitsm/Politics, Movies/Film/Video, Music, Art | No CommentsDEVO’s Gerald Casale waxes poetic on DEVO’s goals and values, with occasional interjections by Mark Mothersbaugh (”If the spud fits, wear it”). In this first interview clip, Gerry discusses the controversial music video for Whip It and speaks rather eloquently about what is and isn’t acceptable and digestible to the public - specifically what types of sexual representation. Other topics include the band’s energy dome head gear and slick hair headpieces. Video quality is bad in the first clip but it’s worth watching. Check out FurionHazard’s youtube channel - this person has posted several other rare DEVO clips. I’m also including below a Honda Ad from 1984 that brilliantly highlights and plays on DEVO’s group image and demeanor.

Halloween 2008!
November 4, 2008 on 1:14 am | In Me, fashion/costume | No CommentsOn account of the disappointing nature of the last few Halloweens, we decided to go all out this year and plan a party, therefore guaranteeing that fun would be had. I believe we started planning on the night of Halloween 2007, already certain that the night was going to be a bust. Fionnuala had not yet moved in with her beau Jason, but regardless, she reassured me that their abode would be the locus of Halloween festivities in 2008.
And so it was.
Feast your eyes on the costumes we put together for the occasion.
I’m usually a space lady, but this year I dressed up as a cardinal. I’d bought the red felt bird body at a thrift store last year and decided to make a headdress to match. More shots of the headdress and process pics coming soon.
Our lovely hostess Fionnuala designed an amazing thermos costume which I proudly assisted in executing. Note the grin of satisfaction and the thermos collection on display behind her.
Our host Jason took the road less traveled with his rendition of Dada from Ultraman. I had no idea who this was but was immensely impressed regardless. He had a figurine around for reference that confirmed the awesome likeness.
And this was before the party even started!
It was well attended by a fine-costumed crowd that included Bjork, a banana, Freddie Mercury, Medusa, Isis, Aquatic Plant Lady, and Future Glasses Dude, to name a few. Check out ALL MY PHOTOS from Halloween 08!
