Devon on the Porch Couch

August 19, 2008 on 12:25 am | In Me, Art | No Comments

Just came across this photo of my cousin Devon, lost in the sauce of ye olde photography website. I get the urge once in a while to add that stuff to my current site, to update it, and to scan more of ye olde negatives. Maybe someday.

Nini Raviolette is my new fave female of the hour. Love her style, love the song, love her Eiffel Tower earrings.

The video’s youtube page includes links to a couple of sites, including this one which features some mp3s. The video is included on a DVD called RVB-TRANSFERT, a collection of French independent music from 1979-1991. Follow the link for info and distributors and this awesome page of clips from the collection.

Spanish synth/electro: Aviador Dro et al

August 11, 2008 on 12:13 am | In Movies/Film/Video, Music | No Comments

I was reading WFMU’s Beware of the Blog and came across this post featuring an assortment of synth music videos. The coolest was Marca de Anubis by Los Iniciados. I’m a sucker for freaky expressionless masks, but this song is super cool too.

Los Iniciados - Marca de Anubis

Los Iniciados is a side project Aviador Dro, a Spanish synth band with decidedly Devo-esque tendencies who have been around since the late 70s. See below, or check out their website for more recent info.

Sondra Prill = Godmother of Bad Karaoke?

August 8, 2008 on 1:25 am | In TV, Found, Folk/Outsider, Movies/Film/Video, Music | 1 Comment

Sondra Prill is a Floridian public access diva with a sassy vision of stardom. She was the star of “My Show,” which aired between 1987 and 1992. Most of the show’s content appears to have been music videos in which she covers popular songs in her distinctly drunk-in-a-karaoke-bar manner, often grunting or yelling for emphasis. At other times she seems to be ad-libbing off-key, sometimes drawing unsuspecting victims into her circle of shrill (see the woman in this clip.) Perhaps most brazenly, she appears green-screened in front of the American flag, attempting a very serious rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.

I submit the following provocative clips for your diligent consumption:

NASTY

Pump Up the Jam

The Star-Spangled Banner

Unidentified Duet w/Piano Tie Guy

Wikipedia link.

Oddly, I discovered Sondra while on a google search for Carol Bove images…I had just listened to an episode of This American Life in which a woman named Carol Bove spoke about her mother, and I was wondering if it was the same Carol Bove. And that led me to look up some images of her work. Anyway, I was led to this blog where Sondra came to life.

Nakedly Screening - Sat 8/2

August 1, 2008 on 11:15 am | In Me, Screenings, Movies/Film/Video, shows, Art | No Comments

I’m participating in a screening at Monkeytown in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, tomorrow, August 2nd. I’m showing a video that I’ve never shown before called Kristin and Linda, shot in 2005 and recently re-edited. Here’s a brief description:

A teenage girl cathartically portrays her own mother in a familiar household scene. The energy behind her performance brings home the amplitude of her frustration and of her mother’s lack of control.

The screening also includes work by friends Jennifer Sullivan (who is also the curator), Brina Thurston, Collin Cunningham, and Jake Borndal, as well as many others whose work I’m unfamiliar with. Come check it out if you’re interested!

Here’s the drill with Monkeytown:
2 screenings: 8 and 10:30
It costs $5 to get in but then you’re supposed to spend $10 while you’re there on drinks and/or their eclectic menu.
Make reservations online beforehand if you want to go.

From Jennifer’s description:

Favoring verité over virtuosity, the videos collected in Nakedly are simple works that bare their own devices, bodies and/or souls…[they] comprise a meandering mix of misty-eyed moments, awkwardness, experiments, humor, vulnerability, longing, sensuality, personal revelation and nudity.
