May 20, 2008 on 1:29 am | In Me, Performance, Dance, fashion/costume, Movies/Film/Video | No CommentsI started working on this project in January or February and suddenly stopped because I didn’t know where to go with it. I’m revisiting it now, trying to figure it out. This is a thumbnail with no audio.
Fred From Jupiter
May 20, 2008 on 1:27 am | In TV, Movies/Film/Video, Music | No CommentsHere’s a nice high quality version of a music video for “Fred vom Jupiter” by Die Doraus und Die Marinas (Andreas Dorau and some female singers) from 1981/82.
The Rainbow Man, The Fabulous Stains, and Pie Fight ‘69
May 15, 2008 on 11:25 pm | In Performance, Movies/Film/Video, Music, Art | No CommentsThe Rainbow Man/John 3:16 is a documentary about rainbow afro-wearing Rollen Stewart, an eccentric publicity fanatic turned Jesus fanatic. His story is not told terribly eloquently, but luckily Rollen can and does speak for himself quite a bit throughout the movie, in interviews conducted in prison. The film’s intro hits hard with Rollen’s depraved childhood and you can’t help but empathize with the guy. It’s worth watching just to hear his crazy story. I won’t spoil it by telling you how he ended up in prison. But if you care to find out for yourself, you can rent the movie or watch this abridged news short.
Among the bonus features were 2 nice surprises. Pie Fight ‘69 is a short about a handful of experimental filmmakers who staged a protest and publicity stunt at the San Francisico Film Festival in 1969, hurling pies at one another, and in effect, on everyone walking up the red carpet. The footage had been shelved, as the filmmakers were not happy with the outcome of the performance, and was eventually lost and then found again. The wacky utopian hijinx make for some excellent footage, and it’s great to see the reaction of the festival attendees, including one uptight woman who is disgusted by the lack of “logic and reason” behind the pie fight. Some highlights are below:
The DVD also included a short about the making of the film Ladies and Gentlemen: The Fabulous Stains. It’s about a punk gal band rising from the ashes of broken homes and apathy. It’s admittedly pretty cheezy but the styles are cool. The “making-of” explains that the film was difficult to complete and never received a proper release, but crappy VHS copies circulated and influenced grrl culture, eh, luminaries such as Courntey Love. It also starred the real-life members of the Sex Pistols, The Tubes, and The Clash in addition to leading teenage ladies Laura Dern and Diane Lane. The lady in the 4th picture below is Nancy Dowd, who wrote the movie, but was no longer on board when it was eventually completed.
After watching this, I busted through the entire film in ten-minute segments on youtube starting HERE.

Gospel + Mime = Mime Ministry
May 15, 2008 on 1:14 am | In Performance, Dance, Found, Movies/Film/Video, Music | No CommentsI had no idea about this concept until I stumbled into it while doing some research on mimes. Pretty amazing. Unfortunately I can’t embed the first video I found of two dudes miming to the J. Moss song “Psalms 150.”
After this first taste I found MANY more videos of this phenomenon. Enjoy!
(Just try to ignore the booking info that pops up now and again in this first one. Still worth watching.)
This last one gets kinda crazy and seems a bit outside the standard mime ministry since it doesn’t appear to be actually performed in a church but rather in affiliation with one.
