Women of Wonder

Check out this dope book I picked up the other day! It’s a real treasure. Women of Wonder: Science Fiction Stories By Women About Women. Oddly enough, I’ve already read one of the stories in it - odd because I think this is only the 3rd or 4th sci fi book I bought for the awesome cover art. The story wasn’t so hot either. I guess there may be very few well-known sci-fi stories by women. Ursula K. LeGuin represents and I tend to think of her as the most famous though I’ve very little information to base this on. She wrote The Lathe of Heaven, which is incidentally a very cool movie.

The New Metalmags?

Hmm, so, I was getting kinda bored with the blond Metalmags wig that I’ve been using for the past few years. One night I put on the new outfit (pictured below) and the blond wig and the make up and all and after walking around for a few minutes I laid down on the floor on my back and passed out. When I woke, I wondered if this was a sign to change course. Collin is keen on the switch to the afro and has even suggested a plot line excuse involving a hair salon to make a smooth transition. I keep going back and forth on the issue. Afros just have so much baggage, and they’ve really been boiled down to “hippie” and/or “black,” thanks in no small part to the modern Halloween costume industry. Yet there is still something so appealing about the afro…I think it’s still a pretty strong symbol for empowerment.

Thoughts?

Voices Across America

August 29, 2007 on 9:08 pm | In Music | No Comments

I found this site a couple weeks back when I was doing a google image search on the town in which my dreamcatcher was, em, handcrafted. I put the link aside and have been meaning to go back. There is just SO much here to sample. It’s a collection of mp3s from little-known musicians in styles including gospel, folk, bluegrass, country, and every imaginable combination of such (e.g. “contemporary southern folk gospel”). There are some outside of these categories too, like Elaine Belsley, who plays the Native American Flute. There is a decidedly religious and countryish feel to most of it, but I urge you to browse around and see what you can find. Pictured below: Voices of Peace from Potter, Wisconsin.

Judee Sill

I was tasked to find an image of Judee Sill at work last week and thus came upon her myspace page, her story, and her music. Her music is very spiritual and beautiful in stark contrast to her tough life and fatal drug addiction.

Check out this video of her performing her song The Kiss.

Greenham Common
Hi there,
Hello and welcome to my news blog. As I don’t currently have any upcoming shows or other news to speak of, I thought I’d start by sharing with you some of the things I’ve been looking at and enjoying lately. I think it was about a month ago that boingboing.net posted about the 25th anniversary of Greenham Common, where women set up camp and staged a series of clever and touching protests at a nuclear test site for years. One protest involved sneaking into the base and dancing on top of the silos while holding hands; another involved the women dressing up as bears and coating themselves in honey so the guards got all sticky when they tried to take the women away. I spent hours on the site one weekend and found some amazing stuff - a very rich archive. It’s a little tough to navigate but it’s well worth the effort.
The Songs of Greenham section kind of blew me away (look for the image of a little notebook with a pencil lying on it). Sarah’s Song and Stand Up are among my faves.

There are also a whole series of pins from the protests that you can, ahem, conveniently add to your blog or myspace page (though, just a warning, their embed code isn’t quite right). Enjoy!
